The EFFECTIVENESS OF HOSPITAL CAMPAIGN ON INFLUENZA VACCINATION UPTAKE OF HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN MATILDA INTERNATIONAL HOSTPITAL, HONG KONG
Introduction: Annual influenza immunization has long been recommended for healthcare workers, although each year less than 50% of Hong Kong healthcare professionals receive vaccination.
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of a hospital influenza vaccination campaign on the rate of vaccination of Healthcare Workers (HCWs).
Methods: To compare the vaccination uptake rate of health care worker before and after interventions during the 2010 to 2011 season.
Setting: A private hospital in Hong Kong.
Interventions: Different interventions were implemented in order to increase the uptake rate among health care workers during Jan and Mar 2011.
a) in service educational talk,
b) influenza declination form,
c) mobile vaccination carts
d) disclosure of departmental uptake rate to Head of Department, and
e) encouragement of Chief Executive Officer
Content: The total number of staff in the study is 275. The HCWs vaccination rate in December 2010 was 15.8% before any interventions. After implementation of the different strategies including in service educational talk , influenza declination form for staff who refuse the vaccine , mobile vaccination carts for staff in both clinical and non-clinical area, disclosure of departmental uptake rate to the department head and encouragement of CEO as a powerful influencing person. The seasonal influenza vaccine uptake rate was significantly increased to 63% (p<0.05).
Conclusion: We conclude that hospital campaigns markedly improve influenza vaccination rate amongst Health Care Workers. Similar significant findings were concluded in other research.
